This Special Release Pikachu Promo Aims to Curb the Influence On Resellers

Marking the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting collaboration is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside the Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop stocked with special merchandise. Enthusiasts will find products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all inspired by the museum's aesthetic. The big draw, however, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. This shop is scheduled from on-site at the museum and online from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated volume packed with stunning illustrations depicting creatures in their wild environments. The concept is the kind of research an in-world scientist could produce once adventurers submit their data, or what Charles Darwin could have sketched had the Galapagos teemed with Pidgeys rather than birds. Part of the charm stems from the book's serious treatment, presenting Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Promo Card Different

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company special edition promos celebrating big events and brand collaborations. Many such promotional cards typically highlight the famous mouse Pokémon who serves as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this latest museum card is its distinctly bigger dimensions. While exact measurements were not publicly disclosed, its distribution will certainly be highly restricted, and customers able to get just one card with each transaction.

Limiting Speculator Activity

According to an official statement, some of the pop-up items may also be available outside the museum walls. However, broader availability is slated for select retailers within the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors will not be able to acquire this promo via the online Pokémon Center. Although reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. If you're unable to attend, consider an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"All profits from purchases made in the Museum shop and its online store, including these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the efforts of 400 scientists who are scientific inquiry and finding answers to the planetary emergency," it notes.
