The Red Devils Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
