The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
