The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
