Prison Shock: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He battled the law and justice triumphed.

Two months subsequent to being handed a 27-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” the nation's political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last appears headed to prison.

Expected Jailing

The convicted plotter – who's been living under residential detention in his residence while a series of court processes and petitions unfold – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the next few days, amid growing talk that he will be moved to a notorious top-security facility.

Previous Remarks on Convicts

During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right ex- soldier showed scant sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.

“What’s the need to give these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to end up in prison, you simply need is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”

Jail Facility Debate

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, a group of four this week toured the prison in an apparent bid to discourage the judiciary from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, said he expected the 70-year-old leader to be incarcerated in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe digestive issues – the consequence of a almost deadly knife attack during the 2018 presidential election race – meant it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His health is highly critical. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the standard of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells containing four dozen inmates: “That’s practically one meter squared per prisoner.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they complain, naturally, of the horrible meals,” continued the senator.

Backers Speak Out

The senator isn't the only voice expressing views prior to the former president’s predicted incarceration.

Penning in a leading publication, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and claimed Brazil was about to see “the biggest political injustice in its past”.

“It represents an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of many of Brazilians,” he stated.

Divided Popular Response

This could be accurate given the considerable backing Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. But his anticipated incarceration has also warmed the spirits of millions other people who feel he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to stop the incoming president from assuming office – and even scheming to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the current leader's political party, stated: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to get respectful treatment – but dignified treatment behind bars. He must not carry on being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long praising the tough conditions of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their rights. “Recently has the extreme right – which has always argued that civil liberties are not for lawbreakers – opted to visit a jail to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, demeaning handling”.

Likely Incarceration Facilities

Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently houses about fourteen thousand inmates, his more likely assigned facility seems to be a adjacent prison for officers and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are considerably more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the stunning leader's home, about 20 kilometers away.

Based on reports, the room Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – roughly the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and includes a 130 square foot WC with a shower and a 12 sq metre veranda. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a set and also a cooler in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” information stated.

Political Responses

Senator Lucas criticized the speculated plan to send the ex-president to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his outcome in the {
