Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Shortly After Budapest Negotiations Suggested
Currently exist "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.
Recently the US president said he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to examine the ongoing hostilities.
A initial discussion between US Secretary of State Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was not "required".
The administration declined to provide any more details on why the talks had been delayed.
Earlier Events
Trump had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.
Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with sources suggesting the president had pressured him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.
Nevertheless, on Monday the American president supported a truce plan backed by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the existing battle lines.
"Let it be cut where it stands," he said.
Russia has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the present battle positions.
The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, implying that pausing conflict would only amount to a brief pause.
Political Perspectives
The "root causes" of the war required resolution, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a set of extensive requirements that include the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.
Zelensky said talks regarding the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.
He further commented the sole subject that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.
Military Considerations
Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently occurred before speculation that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit inside Russia.
Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The conversation concerning the missiles had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
