NY Launches Portal for Residents to Share ICE Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens
The state attorney general has rolled out a fresh online portal asking residents to submit visual evidence of ICE operations across New York. This move follows a day after a significant ICE raid rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking mass outcry.
American Citizens Detained During ICE Operation
A congressional representative disclosed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were arrested and kept for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Protests occurred in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," the AG stated in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement yesterday, I urge you to provide that evidence with my office. We are committed to reviewing these reports and investigating any legal breaches."
Submission Process
The form includes options to submit images and video footage of the incident, plus a field to indicate where it occurred. Prior to sending, individuals must mark a option that acknowledges that "the office might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, including in a lawsuit or public report."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say featured more than 50 ICE personnel, took place in a famous district of Manhattan where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are commonly traded widely – frequently to visitors.
Recordings of the operation reveal several covered and weaponized federal agents restraining and arresting a person, and shoving away bystanders. Throngs of locals followed the officers through the streets. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
In a news conference organized with the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four American citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where four American citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the persons were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman said. "This is a armed campaign to create conflict. It is purely a excuse to incite violence for this administration to deploy the troops to prevent violence that they themselves caused."
Extensive Outcry
Fury over the federal action escalated – all three political contenders denounced the raid, along with the state leader.
"Yet again, the Trump administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate stated.
NYC advocacy organizations expressed outrage too.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with armored transports, masked agents and tactical gear to go after local sellers trying to make a living. This operation had no connection to public safety and was entirely about intimidating residents and neighborhoods," said the leader of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
Agency rules bans the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it refrains from apprehend US citizens. However, independent reporting has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been held against their will by ICE since the beginning of the present government.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been rising in frequency in the state and across the US this year.
A recent action in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Protests against federal operations are widespread as are claims of force and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a document provided by civil rights groups stated healthcare failures of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
