Jurgen Klopp says a return to lead Liverpool is conceivable.
The German coach, who departed from Liverpool in 2024, remarked that a future comeback is something that could happen. Klopp, post a game-changing nine-season tenure featuring a European Cup triumph and ending the club's long wait since 1990, currently occupies roles in a global football capacity for Red Bull and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
Liverpool won the league title under Arne Slot, yet numerous supporters holding him in high esteem would embrace the idea of his potential comeback. In a wide-ranging interview, he explained to his interviewer: “I declared I refuse to lead a different club in England. Therefore should it be the Reds...yes. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“Being 58, so I could make the decision down the line, I don’t know. Must I choose now? In that case, I'd stay away. Fortunately, I don’t have to do that. I can just see what the future brings.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on the specific conditions would need to occur to bring him back to management, he confessed he feels no immediate pull to such a return. “I'm not entirely sure, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “No longing for management; I don’t miss standing during downpours for two-and-a-half or three hours; No need for interviews multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“No nostalgia for the changing area per se, yet sharing a meal with the team having a nice chat, is pleasant. With many victories thus frequently positive atmosphere around the place. I still have Van Dijk's laughter in my ear to illustrate.”
Praise for His Successor
Klopp was full of praise regarding Arne Slot, acknowledging his role due to the changes that won the league in the previous season. They've been defeated a string of losses in all competitions post heavy investment, though he denied the idea that it might signal a decline.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, you will all eat your words with negative comments. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, excellent performer. It’s a really good well-judged squad. Fans shouldn't fret regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of Jota, whom he brought in in 2020, and the effect for the team. The forward died tragically in a road accident alongside his brother this past summer.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? It’s not about the player himself, his personality mattered. I can’t imagine the dressing room absent his presence. Putting it into words is tough about it. It was an incredible shock for his teammates as well. No one within the club might employ it to justify results though it's a fact. You walk in a dressing room where he was omnipresent. Dealing with that individually is difficult. Overwhelming.”
