French authorities will start intercepting small boats in Channel following British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a major advancement, coming after a short-lived change towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
