Former British Soldier Accused of Killing Kenya Female Appears in Courtroom
An individual has shown up before a judge as extradition proceedings began in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a woman of Kenyan origin who was found dead near a British army base in the year 2012.
Purkiss, thirty-eight, who is hailing from the Manchester area, appeared before the Westminster court on Friday, and told the court he intended to contest the extradition. Sources suggest that he was arrested on the evening of Thursday.
A warrant for arrest for Purkiss was issued by a Kenyan court in Nairobi in September. The prosecution stated before the Kenyan court that the individual had been accused of a one count, of homicide, and that the Kenyan authorities would pursue his extradition to stand trial.
The defendant was once employed as a medical attendant with the Lancaster Regiment, the infantry regiment for the north-west of England, including on missions to Afghanistan.
Agnes Wanjiru, 21, a beautician who had a young daughter, went missing after a night out, and her body was found 60 days later in the premises of the hotel where she had most recently observed.
Not a single person had previously been arrested or charged in association with her passing. His detention was the result of a fresh police investigation, which came after a report in 2021 by the Sunday Times, in which the media outlet contacted several serving and ex-military personnel in the unit.
This inquiry has been spearheaded by detectives in Kenya, which, under a mutual defense pact, retains jurisdiction in the matter.
