England to Launch Euro 2028 Quest at City’s Home Ground
The English squad will embark on their Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they attain the expected passage for a championship hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an Three Lions fixture since eight years ago, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to welcome the England side for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are set to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, should they win the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would occur at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean commencing the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Kickoff and Demonstration
The championship was inaugurated at an event in central London on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were confronted as they entered the location by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be kicked out from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.
Signs were held up with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The opening game of Euro 2028 will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will involve the Welsh team if they secure a place.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from the following campaign, will appeal to families and help engage a more diverse set of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would follow suit at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will enter the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that do not reach the finals through that route.
Locations and Elimination Phase
Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals played at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.
Leadership Comment
“This will be a competition for the supporters and a festival of everything we cherish about the game – its emotion and ability to foster unity.”
More than three million passes, a record for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be released to fans.
