Battlefield 6's Casual Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a new game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but features a few key adjustments:
- Every squad includes only 8 real players, with the rest filled by AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities done by real players grant full XP, while bot actions offer lower rewards.
- Only two locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
- Features like Dogtags, accolades, and career stat updates have been turned off.
In short, the playlist lives up to its title: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think there's nothing wrong, as it gives more options for gamers looking for alternative methods to have fun with the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 players are mad.
Player Reactions: From Fury to Support
"Gamers prefer real players. Avoid making the errors of your rivals," states one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking idea," comments another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," while another lists everything they believe to be problematic in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this bot mode."
However, amid the criticism, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players keep it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who have lives and can't play this title all the time. Let them find a middle ground," adds a different comment. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is perfect for me," and someone else applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Constructive Criticisms and Community Input
Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. Some users have pointed out that it will make wait times even longer for different playlists due to the sheer number of playlists in the game already. On a similar note, certain regions already encounter mostly bots in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode won't start without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was promised to provide full XP, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to remove bot farms from the system. Thus this new playlist seems like the player base meeting them in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another labels this addition as the devs "dropping the ball so hard, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Future Prospects: Adjustments Be Made?
If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something so far with the latest installment, it is that they're listening and responding to feedback. Assignments being too difficult were adjusted rapidly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, if their data indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
